“How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my company?” is now a normal question from buyers. The honest answer has three parts: here is the mechanism, here is what influences it, and here is what nobody can promise.

The mechanism

When ChatGPT names companies in a category, the names come from two places: patterns absorbed during training, and — when browsing is active — sources retrieved at answer time. Neither is a ranking system you can submit to. Both ultimately trace back to what the wider web says about who operates in your category.

The practical consequence: your own website is necessary but rarely sufficient. Your site establishes what you are; other sites establish that you are worth naming.

What influences it, ranked by leverage

Lever Leverage Why
Presence in vendor-listing sources Highest Directly the material naming behaviour is drawn from
Entity resolvability High An ambiguous brand cannot be attributed to confidently
Consistent descriptors Medium-high Being described the same way everywhere reinforces the association
Retrievable, well-structured pages Medium Matters most when browsing is active
Publishing more definitional articles Low In our own testing, awareness-stage prompts produced zero vendor names at all

What nobody can promise

  • Deterministic output. The same prompt can return different companies on different runs. Any single screenshot proves very little.
  • A submission route. There is no index to submit to and no paid placement in organic answers.
  • A guaranteed percentage. Treat a promised citation rate as a warning sign.

Measuring it without fooling yourself

Four rules make the difference between a real measurement and a flattering one:

  1. Use non-brand prompts. Asking “tell me about [your brand]” measures nothing.
  2. Use enough of them. Ten prompts is noise. Fifty to a hundred starts to be signal.
  3. Run repeatedly and average. Output varies; a single run is an anecdote.
  4. Store the raw answers. Unverifiable numbers are worth nothing to a client and should be worth nothing to you.

How we measure AI visibility

Most agencies claim AI visibility. Very few publish how they measure it. Here is our method, in full:

Step What we do
1. Prompt set We build 50–100 prompts a real buyer in your category would type. None of them contain your brand name — the point is to see whether the model brings you up unprompted.
2. Engine runs Each prompt is run against the AI engines in scope, on a fixed date, and the raw answers are stored so you can audit them later.
3. Scoring Mention Rate (% of answers naming your brand) · Citation Rate (% citing your domain) · Share of Model (your mentions ÷ all competitor mentions).
4. Competitor board The same run tells you which brands the model currently treats as the category leaders.
5. Re-measure Same prompt set, same engines, 90 days later. Movement is comparable because nothing about the test changed.

What we do not claim: engine coverage is stated explicitly in every report. A measurement against one model is not a measurement of Google’s AI Overviews, and we will never present one as the other.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Not in organic answers. Advertising products are separate and clearly labelled where they exist.

Does having an llms.txt file get me cited?

It helps retrieval systems understand your site. On its own it does not cause a model to name you — citation behaviour is driven mainly by third-party sources.

Why does ChatGPT name my competitor and not me?

Almost always because your competitor appears in the roundups, directories and discussions the model drew on. Our baseline shows exactly which competitors are named and on which prompts.

How often should we re-measure?

Quarterly for most brands. More often adds noise rather than insight, because run-to-run variance is real.

Where does your brand stand in AI answers?

Send us your domain. We run the baseline and send your Mention Rate, Citation Rate and competitor board — no charge, no commitment.
