Teams often treat e-e-a-t as a checklist: add an author bio, insert a few citations, and expect rankings to improve. That approach confuses a quality concept used by Google’s evaluators with the signals that search systems can observe, compare, and use.
The practical question is narrower and more useful: which visible or inferable signals support experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness, and where can a site prove them? E-E-A-T itself is not a ranking factor with a score, threshold, or switch. Its measurable proxies are what matter.
E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. Google introduced the additional “E” for experience in its Search Quality Rater Guidelines in December 2022. The guidelines help human evaluators judge search-result quality; they do not give SEOs a direct E-E-A-T score to optimise.
Google’s evaluators do not manually change a page’s ranking after reviewing it. Their assessments are used to test and improve search systems. Ranking systems then use many signals to estimate whether content is useful, reliable, relevant, and satisfying for a query.
That distinction matters because a page can have excellent E-E-A-T in the real world without Google being able to verify it from the web. A respected surgeon who publishes anonymously has strong expertise, but little machine-readable evidence of it. Conversely, a page can display impressive credentials while offering inaccurate or unsafe advice. A badge is not proof.
Think of E-E-A-T as the quality model and proxies as the evidence. Proxies include bylines, author entities, editorial policies, citations, first-hand detail, business information, independent references, reviews, links, corrections, and technical accessibility. None guarantees a position. Together, they reduce uncertainty about who made the content, why they should be trusted, and whether the claims stand up.
The table below separates on-site evidence from off-site evidence. “Off-site” does not mean “build links at any cost”. It means evidence that exists independently of the page being assessed.

The proxies must match the claim. A recipe site does not need medical credentials, while a page explaining drug interactions does. A company may be authoritative about its own product but not about an unrelated investment strategy. Relevance is part of the test.
An author entity is a recognisable person or organisation that search systems can associate with a body of work and a set of attributes. The objective is not to create a fictional “SEO author”. It is to make a real contributor identifiable and consistently represented.

Structured data can help machines interpret relationships, but it does not manufacture reputation. The same person should not appear as a doctor, lawyer, financial adviser, and engineer merely because those labels improve keyword coverage. False or inflated credentials damage trust and can create legal risk.
The popular advice “add an author bio to every article and E-E-A-T is solved” is wrong. A bio is an identity signal, not evidence that the article is accurate, first-hand, independently reviewed, or useful. A thin bio attached to generic, untested content adds very little.
Google’s quality guidance uses the term YMYL, or “Your Money or Your Life”, for topics that can significantly affect a person’s health, financial stability, safety, legal position, or wider wellbeing. The threshold is not a special ranking switch. It is a higher consequence of being wrong, so trust and evidence matter more.
For YMYL content, a publisher should expect scrutiny in at least five areas:
Use operational standards rather than pretending Google publishes a universal YMYL score. For example, a publisher might require 100% of clinical claims to pass specialist review, review financial guidance every 6 months, and update regulatory references within 30 days of a material rule change. Those are internal controls, not Google thresholds.
Not every page in a YMYL category requires the same author. A personal account of living with a condition can demonstrate experience without presenting the writer as a clinician. It must not blur the boundary between lived experience and medical advice. Conversely, a treatment comparison may require medical expertise even if the writer has personal experience.
Search systems can process much more than the words in an article. They can inspect page structure, links, entities, consistency, accessibility, and relationships between documents. That does not mean they understand every claim perfectly, but it creates measurable surfaces for quality evidence.

Do not mistake technical cleanliness for trust. Fast loading, valid markup, and a good mobile experience remove friction, but they cannot establish that a dosage recommendation is safe or that a product review was genuinely performed.
Off-site evidence is valuable because a publisher cannot fully control it. Independent mentions, professional profiles, editorial citations, reviews, and references can help establish that an entity exists and is recognised for a particular subject.
However, authority is not the same as link volume. Ten relevant editorial references may be more informative than hundreds of unrelated directory links. A link from a respected specialist publication can provide context; a paid link network can provide noise or create a policy risk.
Brand searches, review platforms, business listings, expert quotations, and consistent professional profiles can all contribute to entity understanding. They are not votes that automatically transfer ranking power. Google must still determine whether the source is independent, relevant, current, and credible.
For an entity audit, reconcile the site with at least three external identity sources where they exist: a professional profile, an institutional or business record, and independent coverage or reviews. The goal is consistency, not artificial profile creation. Do not create 20 low-quality author pages, buy testimonials, or ask unrelated sites to describe a contributor as an expert.
Start with a claim-level audit rather than an abstract E-E-A-T score. Select the pages that generate revenue, influence decisions, or attract links. For each important claim, record the author, reviewer, source, date, evidence type, risk level, and required update interval.

Track outcomes separately: qualified organic traffic, conversions, assisted revenue, serious complaints, correction rates, and performance of refreshed pages over 8 to 12 weeks. A ranking change alone cannot prove that an E-E-A-T improvement caused the result.
The strongest E-E-A-T work makes a page easier to verify. It connects a real contributor to relevant experience, supports consequential claims, exposes commercial incentives, and gives readers a way to correct or challenge the information. Google cannot directly measure reputation as a human would, but it can observe many of the signals that make reputation credible—and those proxies are where an SEO programme should concentrate.
